*** AN EXCELLENT INTERPRETATION OF A TROPICAL SCENT THAT GIVES YOU THE WISH TO DRINK  ***

Virgin Island Water was inspired by a sailing trip near Ginger Island in the Caribbean. This unisex perfume celebrates the tropical splendor and exotic scents carried by the Trade Winds of Sir Francis Drake Channel.

It opens with a citrusy cocktail of white bergamot, Jamaican lime, Sicilian mandarin. The citruses are accompanied by a note of copra, the white inner flesh of the coconut. The heart includes intensive Indian jasmine and sweet hibiscus, exotic ylang-ylang and cold, spicy ginger. The base of the composition includes sugar cane, musk and white rum.

I am not overwhelmingly fond of citrus perfumes – partially as I like my citrus edible. This is an interesting combination of bitter citrus (lime) and milky creaminess. Not terribly original of Creed and I wonder if their brand is more responsible for the success of Virgin Island Water than the actual perfume. This is an interesting study of that as it is much more complex than I originally thought (and I’ve approximated the smell of this in my own reconstructions with 5 ingredients) – as always, this for me remains an excellent material to study but not something I will probably wear extensively.

I am really impressed with this formula. Apart from a bit harsh top notes (the balance of citrus notes esp. the amount of lemongrass must be carefully dosed!) the profile is pretty accurate. A great lesson to learn to use a whole set of different lactones in trace amounts to get such an elegant creaminess. Yummy.

After looking over the formula, things didn’t look right at all. I made this batch up anyways and compared it to my VIW (sprayed this formula on one hand, and VIW on the other), and its not even close. This formula is WAY off.

    Hi Steve
    Thank you for your feedback.
So in your opinion what things didnt look right?
Did you follow the formula close or did you change anything??
    Kind regards.

I followed the formula ‘as-is’ based on your interpretation. This formula smells a bit earthy in comparison to VIW. I think it really depends on the ‘type’ of Patchouli used, and should probably use Patchoulol Crystals or Clearwood (firmenich) to tame the earthyness. Also, the citral content i dont think is coming from Lemongrass (also slightly too green/earthy) and maybe should use Litsea Cubeba instead. But the citruses also seem a bit off, the lime isnt forward enough and orange oil probably needs to come down or replaced with lemon. Overall, the citrus opening just seems not very VIW like (lacks terpy sparkle). The drydown however is real close to VIW (assuming you use patchoulol or clearwood instead). And there’s no dihydromyrcenol in this at all? I could swear i smell some in my VIW batch. And no natural ginger or ylang ylang?

Overall, it has a ‘vibe’ of VIW, but this formula still needs adjusting (re-look the GCMS) to get it there 100%
