This is the first Cuir de Russie formula I’ve seen that looks to recreate the modern formulation of this scent from this particular brand vs just historical versions of this accord. Smells very close to the current version of this. I was pleasantly surprised to confirm that some of the things I smelled in it with an untrained nose (a noticeable dose of DHM + linalool, namely, that offset the deep, tarry, leather notes) are here. A long and complicated formula, though it still contains things that the avid hobbyist should have in their arsenal. Well done!

There are two formulas here. The older formula is more of an essay into how the vintage may have been constructed. And it is interesting because it has little in common with the new version but is of equal importance to study the building of a bitter woody accord which I am so fond of. The modern version here had me confused – the first time I mixed it, I followed the instructions but got something that had a very weird top note. I started a process of elimination and removed some of the more characteristic elements (such as the birch tar) and it was the main culprit to my top notes – which speaks for the variability of birch quality out there that can (although relatively low amount) contribute so significantly that it creates a false impression. The final experiment I did was to replace the gamma methyl ionone with pure methyl ionone – this also helped (at least to my nose) to remove some of the ‘oily’ impression that can be created when there is an over satisfaction of the gamma methyl ionone. Probably in the future I will try replacing that with iralia or even with other ionones (like the more woody alpha ionone for example) and see how that comes together. Point is – great study formula here for such an important fragrance!

The vintage formula is a sketch, similar to the Shalimar and No.5 formulas. It aldehydic and animalic and wild. Very interesting experience.
The modern formula is a more beautiful version of the current edp. I was surprised by the animalic ingredients but they were successfully tamed by all the iris materials. I followed John’s recommendation and used a variety of methyl ionones: Iralia, gamma and alpha methyl ionones, and a bit of orris butter. It came out a sophisticated leather iris. I look forward to trying the other Chanels.
