There are several perfumes here that I remember trying in the beginning of my perfume learning career when niche brands were still not as omnipresent as they are today. And MDCI was one of those that had captured my curiosity, partially because of the tremendous words of positivity from Luca Turin in his 1st Guide where both Invision Barbare and Chypre Palatin were very positively reviewed. So back more than 10 years ago my curiosity overcame me and I bought samples – I even remember the small demands I received them in – they were beautiful small glass bottles that felt like they hold really precious elixirs. And I remember hoarding that small bottle as if it was made only for hyper special occasions. The curious thing is that special occasions that call for this particular perfume are so rare that I ended up wearing it exclusively at home. Why? Because this is one of those typical chypre perfumes that makes you question whether you wear a perfume or the perfume wears you – a gorgeous abstract mystical combination of herbs: bitter and (only slightly) sweet, thin and yet very thick, medicinal and strongly hedonistic. This formula is a killer – both in the positive sense (being such a fantastic rendition of the original) and because of the high complexity it has (and required patience to blend). Loving it!

Beautiful operatic perfume! I doubled the naturals and substituted non-IFRA compliant oakmoss for evernyl to suite my personal tastes.
I don’t know which formulation this is. It is lighter than the picture but has the complexity and beauty of an earlier formulation. (Kafkaesque has a blog article dedicated to Chypre Paladin reformulations as it is her mom’s favorite).
This formula is far better than the current Chypre Paladin formulation, which is nice synthetic-leaning vanilla amber.
