At first, I wasn’t sure about it – it was supposed to be patchouli but it doesn’t smell much of it. It is somewhat leathery with quite a bit of clove and carnation to create the impression of old musty library. The robustness of the formula is phenomenal – it has great projection even at low dilution, structurally it is not too sweet and not too cloying, and it does have a distant connection to Lonestar Memories without the birth tar or guaiacol. I did not like it in the beginning but the more I smell it, the more I am liking it. A recommendation – this has to be smelled in dilution – as a concentrate, it is too muddy to appreciate.

While my scent memory always connects this scent with Bulgari Black, looking at the formulas, it’s so interesting to see just how different they are! And it makes me wonder what connects them in their olfactive profiles. In any case, I found this formula really true to Le Labo scent. I was surprised by the Iso Eugenol/carnation type materials used here, but they make total sense when you think of them as already being smoky and then enhanced by birch tar. Well done and just smells great (agreed with the above review–definitely in dilution)!
