I am somewhat of a stranger to the RD line of perfumes and the critics aren’t necessarily gentle to his work so I approached this with a degree of caution. I am missing some of the ingredients and so I am not comparing it to the original but what I can see and smell here is interesting. It is a perfume in the grand manner – i.e. it is not modern, not linear, but very complex and changing quite a bit through its life on the skin. It starts with a smell that even reminds me a bit of bacon which is odd but not unpleasant. And after about 30 min it turns into a beautiful fruity gourmand very much with the feel of a plum jam which then transitions into a balsamic woody sweet base. I am not sure it is a masterpiece but it is not to be totally ignored.

I have never smelt the original but I’m fairly sure that it wouldn’t be worth the $1400 price label! That said this is rather special. I have only just blended it today but couldn’t resist testing a little on my skin immediately it was made. It’s a very complex ambery, woody scent with fruity and smoky facets. At this stage the Allyl amyl glycolate sticks out a little bit too much at the outset but I’m sure that will settle down after a bit of maturation. I’m missing a few of the materials, particularly some of the boozy, sparkling top notes but I hope to add these soon. The performance is excellent. It has been on the back of my hand for over 9 hours and there is still a lovely soft woody vanilla drydown very evident. Despite its tenacity it isn’t too in your face, it just keeps billowing out occasional wafts throughout the day, just perfect! I look forward to making up La Nuit 3 next and comparing the two.
